Project Summary

Melco Engineering were engaged by Thiess to undertake the supply, manufacture and installation of a modularised coal pre-treatment plant (Beneficiation Plant) at the Lake Vermont coal mine.

The overall plant consisted of a Feeder-Sizer (Crushing) module, Beneficiation / Jig Separation module plus Product and Rejects Radial Stackers. The plant is self-sufficient and powered by a diesel generator.

The coal beneficiation solution is based on the concept of pre-treating a portion of the ROM coal that has purposely been mined with excess dilution whilst optimising resource recovery, before delivery to the CHPP for final processing.

The diluted coal material is firstly fed into the Feeder–Sizer module for correct sizing before entering the beneficiation module where separation of the waste and coal takes place, based on the difference in material densities. The separated coal and waste components then report to individual stockpiles via the radial stackers.

The Melco scope included fabrication, assembly, transport and site installation of the newly designed Feeder-Sizer Module, Beneficiation / Jig Separation Module, Jig Hutch, Bucket Elevator, 30m Rejects Radial Stacker and 40m Product Radial Stacker and encompassed 25,000 labour hours and provided approximately 40 jobs to the local Mackay economy over the course of an 18-month duration.
